The Management PhD program requires completion of 37 seminar credits and 15 dissertation credits. Seminar coursework is typically completed during the first two years of study, prior to the comprehensive examination. Following successful completion of the comprehensive exam, students will enroll in dissertation or research credits each semester until graduation.

Students complete 6 credits of supporting elective coursework outside the department.

Dissertation Research
15 credits of GRAD 6950 – student enrolls each semester after completion of comprehensive exam

Take classes

Work on qualifying paper (QP) throughout the spring and summer (and form your QP committee)
Attend AOM conference for the first time

Year 2
Take classes (you should complete most, if not all, of your coursework by the end of the year)

Present and pass your QP (by the end of the fall semester)
Begin teaching in your spring semester
Take (and pass) written comps over the summer (typically in June)
Attend and ideally present for the first time at AOM

Year 3
Finalize any coursework that has not been completed

Teach a class one semester
Work seriously on research projects with faculty; ideally you will be able to start submitting papers to journals
Begin thinking about your dissertation topic and form your dissertation committee
Submit research to conferences and/or organize symposia
Year 4
RA/TA
Teach one semester
Defend your dissertation proposal by the winter before beginning to work on data collection and analysis in the spring and summer; you should have some preliminary results to share by the end of the summer
Put together your job market packet and begin applying for jobs over the summer
Attend AOM and set up informal/formal interviews

Year 5

Teach one semester
Continue working on your dissertation and complete your “job talk” paper in the early fall
Put together job talk slides, engage in interviews and fly-outs throughout the fall; you should hopefully have a job by the end of the fall semester
Apply to graduate by the 4th week of the spring semester
Complete and defend your dissertation by the end of the spring semester
